Conducted by David law, Sound and Smoke, as performed by the Queensland Wind Orchestra, is a program full of astonishing beauty, breathtaking experiences and exquisite details.
I had the opportunity, along with Johan Deecke and Chris Ware, to record this incredible concert performed at the Old Museum in Brisbane.
For the event we were stationed in a room off to the side of the hall as to have audio isolation to better monitor what was being recorded. The performance was captured using a pair of KM184s in a NOS stereo configuration and a pair of DPA1100s in a wide stereo A-B configuration. These were run through a Focusrite interface connected to a Macbook Pro running Pro Tools. All tracks were edited in accordance with 4MBS classical recording standards. These tracks were later mixed with minimal processing (HPF to remove low rumble from room and audience; and mild compression to raise the sustain and the performance) and delivered as 24bit, 48kHz WAV files. The full performance can be heard below.
